This is the premium refill for a dual-stage Big Blue whole-house system — the same sediment-plus-carbon configuration as our standard set, with the carbon stage upgraded from a standard CTO block to extruded coconut-shell carbon.
Coconut carbon has a denser, finer micropore structure than standard carbon. That’s what makes it the preferred media for taste and odor — it adsorbs chlorine and the small organic compounds behind off-flavors more effectively. Because the block is extruded as one solid piece, water can’t channel around the media, so every gallon gets full carbon contact.
The practical payoff is two-fold: noticeably better-tasting water at every tap, and a 6–12 month carbon life instead of the standard block’s 3–12 — typically fewer changes on the same water. Stage 1 does its usual job of protecting the carbon so it spends its whole life on chlorine and taste rather than clogging with grit.
Both cartridges fit any standard 10″ × 4.5″ Big Blue housing. Sediment in the first housing (water inlet side), coconut block in the second.

Coconut vs. standard CTO. Both reduce chlorine, taste, and odor. Coconut carbon’s finer micropore structure gives it an edge on taste polishing and small organic compounds, and it’s rated for a longer service life. If dependable chlorine reduction at the lowest cost is the goal, the standard SC-10BB set does the job — this is the upgrade when taste matters.
Order matters at install. Sediment goes in the FIRST housing (water inlet side), coconut block in the second. Reversed, the carbon clogs with grit and dies early.
The stages run on different clocks. The sediment cartridge (3–6 months) will usually need changing before the coconut block (6–12 months). Many customers buy one set plus a couple of single SED5-10BB cartridges to cover the mid-cycle sediment change — quantity pricing on singles makes that inexpensive.
Chlorine, not chloramine. Coconut carbon block handles chlorine well; chloramine-treated water needs catalytic carbon for effective reduction. Check your utility’s annual water report if you’re not sure which your city uses.
Flush on install. Run water to drain for a few minutes after a change — new carbon releases harmless fines at first.
