Three stages, in the right order

Order matters more than most listings admit. Put carbon first and it clogs with grit within weeks. Each stage here protects the one behind it.

Stage 1
Sediment, 5 micron		 Spun polypropylene depth filter. Traps dirt, sand, silt and rust before they reach the carbon — which is what makes the carbon stages last.
Stage 2
GAC, 25 micron		 Granular activated carbon. Loose media means high flow with low pressure drop, doing the bulk of the work on chlorine, taste, odor and many organic compounds.
Stage 3
Coconut carbon block, 10 micron		 Premium coconut shell carbon block. Denser media, longer contact time, finer particle capture. This is the stage that decides how the water actually tastes.

Coconut shell carbon is harder than coal-based carbon with more micropore surface area, and it comes from a renewable source. Most systems at this price ship coal-based carbon in all stages.

The cartridges ship wrapped inside the housings — unwrap them before you connect the water. Depending on your pipe type you may still need adapters or shutoff valves; check the manual before you start.

Installs on the main line after the meter and any pressure regulator, ahead of your water heater. Leave roughly 4″ of clearance below the housings so you can drop the cartridges out at change time. If you aren’t comfortable working on house plumbing, a plumber will have this in within an hour.

Before you buy
  • Built for municipal water. This is a sediment and carbon system — it is not a microbiological purifier, it does not soften water, and it does not remove dissolved minerals.
  • On well water, test first. Iron, hardness and bacteria need specific pre-treatment that carbon cannot provide.
  • Chloraminated supply? Standard carbon does little against chloramine — swap Stage 2 or 3 for catalytic carbon and ask us which arrangement suits your water.
  • Housings are a wear item. Replace every 3–4 years, and the O-rings every 12–24 months.
