When to change your filters
| Component | Typical interval | Change sooner if… |
|---|---|---|
| Both cartridges | 6–12 months as often as every 3 months on heavy sediment |
Water pressure drops, the sediment filter turns brown, or chlorine taste comes back |
| Housing O-rings | Inspect every change Replace every 12–24 months |
Cracked, flattened, brittle, or weeping at the seam |
| Filter housings | Clear: 3–4 years Blue: 4–5 years |
Any hairline cracks, cloudiness, or a leak that a new O-ring doesn’t stop |
Intervals are typical estimates. Your water chemistry, pressure, and household usage set the real schedule.
Changing your filters
- Shut off the water. Use the shutoff valves or bypass around the system if you have them; if not, close the main house shutoff.
- Open a cold tap downstream, then press the pressure-release button on each housing cap. Never open a housing under pressure.
- Put a bucket and towels underneath, then unscrew each housing with the filter wrench.
- Remove the old cartridges and rinse the housings with clean water; no soap.
- Inspect each O-ring. Seat it fully in its groove and wipe it with a thin film of food-grade silicone grease.
- Fit the new cartridges in flow order: sediment in the first housing (water inlet), coconut carbon block in the second. Reversed, the carbon clogs early.
- Hand-tighten each housing, then snug it with the wrench. Don’t overtighten.
- Turn the water back on slowly, press the release buttons to let the air out, and check for leaks now and again after 12 hours.
- Run a cold tap for a few minutes to flush. Some black carbon fines at first are normal.
- Write the date on the booklet that came with the set, so the next change is easy to plan.
Common questions
| What you’re seeing | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| Water pressure has dropped | The sediment filter is full. Change filters sooner on dirty or well water. |
| Leak where a housing meets the cap | O-ring twisted, dry or out of its groove. Release pressure, reseat and lightly grease it, re-tighten. |
| Black specks after a change | Carbon fines from the new carbon block. Keep flushing a few more minutes. |
| Chlorine taste or odor comes back | The carbon block is used up. Change both cartridges. |
| Still smells of chlorine right after a change | Your city may use chloramine, which carbon block doesn’t reduce. Use a catalytic carbon cartridge in the second housing. |
| Housing won’t unscrew | Pressure is still in the system. Turn off the supply, press the release button, then use the wrench. |
| The cartridge won’t fit or seal | Your housings may be Big Blue (4.5″ wide). This set is for slim 2.5″ housings. |
