Description
Advanced Catalytic Carbon Water Filter Cartridge
Size: 9 7/8″ × 2.5″ (Standard 10″)
This catalytic carbon filter cartridge is designed to effectively reduce chlorine, chloramine, hydrogen sulfide (H₂S – “rotten egg” odor), soluble (ferrous) iron (at some degrees), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), industrial solvents, and unpleasant taste and odor in drinking water. Compared to standard GAC carbon, catalytic carbon provides enhanced performance, particularly for chloramine reduction and sulfur-related odors.
Made with Centaur® catalytic carbon from Calgon Carbon, a premium carbon media known for its high catalytic activity, improved contaminant conversion, and long-lasting performance.
In addition, this filter helps reduce iron-related taste, odor, and discoloration when used as part of a properly designed filtration system.
Purpose
Use as the second stage in undersink reverse osmosis (RO) systems or whole house water filtration systems to improve water quality and protect downstream filters.

| Cartridge Comparison Chart – 10″ × 2.5″ (9 7/8″ × 2.5″) | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SKU | Cartridge Type | Purpose | What It Removes | Iron & H2S Effectiveness / Best Use |
| First Stage – Sediment Filtration | ||||
| SED5 (SED5-10) | Standard Sediment 5 Micron | Basic sediment removal to protect downstream filters | Sand, dirt, rust, silt | • Municipal water • Low–moderate sediment load |
| SED5-PLT | Pleated Sediment | High-capacity Multi Use filter with extended service life (more surface area) | Sand, dirt, silt, debris | • Well water / high sediment • Longer service intervals |
| Second Stage – Carbon Filtration | ||||
| GAC (GAC-10) | Media: GAC Carbon | Chlorine taste & odor reduction | Chlorine, Chloramine, taste, odor | • No iron / sulfur removal |
| CAT-10 | Media: Catalytic Carbon (Centaur Catalityc Calgon) | Advanced chemical reduction (better for chloramine vs. standard GAC) | Chlorine, chloramine, VOCs, solvents, H2S (rotten egg odor), low iron |
• Iron: effective for trace/low levels (about up to ~0.3 ppm) • H2S: mild odor reduction |
| CATKDF85-10 | Media: Catalytic Carbon + KDF-85 (3/4 lbs) | Iron & sulfur odor reduction plus broad chemical filtration | Iron, H2S, chlorine/chloramine, VOCs, heavy metals (redox treatment) |
• IRON: stronger reduction; suitable for light–moderate iron (about ~1–3 ppm) • H2S (rotten egg): stronger, more consistent odor reduction • Manganese: effective for LOW manganese only: approximately 0.1–1.0 ppm (mg/L) |
| Third Stage – Carbon Block / Polishing | ||||
| CTO-10 (CTO105) | Standard CTO Block | Final carbon filtration / polishing | Chlorine, taste, odor | • Standard use • Great as final polishing stage |
| CBCO-10-5 | Activated Coconut Carbon Block | Enhanced polishing with premium adsorption | Chlorine, VOCs, chemicals, taste & odor. Coconut-shell carbon provides higher adsorption efficiency, cleaner taste, and lower ash content compared to standard carbon blocks. | • Premium taste-focused use • Higher performance adsorption |
Important Performance Notes
🔩 Iron Removal Clarification
-
CAT-10 (Catalytic Carbon only)
-
Provides limited iron reduction
-
Best for trace iron typically found in municipal water
-
Effective range: up to ~0.3 ppm
-
Not intended as a primary iron filter
-
-
CATKDF85-10 (Catalytic Carbon + KDF-85)
-
Significantly stronger iron reduction due to redox reaction
-
Suitable for light to moderate iron levels
-
Effective range: up to ~1–3 ppm in cartridge (non-backwashing) systems
-
Helps prevent iron fouling of downstream filters
-
🥚 Hydrogen Sulfide (Rotten Egg Smell)
-
Catalytic carbon converts hydrogen sulfide through oxidation
-
CAT-10: effective for mild sulfur odor
-
CATKDF85-10: enhanced H₂S reduction, more stable performance, longer media life
-
For high sulfur levels, a backwashing system or aeration is recommended
⚙️ Manganese
-
CATKDF85-10. Effective for LOW manganese only: approximately 0.1–1.0 ppm (mg/L)
💊 Pharmaceuticals and pesticides reduction
-
-
CATKDF85-10: Catalytic carbon is an effective medium designed to help reduce pesticides, herbicides, PFAS, and pharmaceuticals, offering improved performance compared to standard GAC filters
