What it does

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is the standard second-stage carbon filter. As water flows through the loose carbon bed, it adsorbs chlorine, chloramine, and VOCs, and strips out the unwanted tastes and odors that make tap water unpleasant.

GAC is the budget-friendly choice for everyday municipal water where the main goal is better-tasting, better-smelling water. Its loose granular form gives excellent contact for taste-and-odor work, which is exactly what most city-water homes need.

Built to standard 10″ × 2.5″ (9⅞″ × 2.5″) dimensions, it drops into common standard-size housings. If your water also has chloramine to tackle aggressively, iron, or a sulfur (rotten-egg) smell, step up to a catalytic carbon stage — see the comparison below.

SED5-PLT Pleated sediment Well water / high sediment · longer life
Stage 2 — Carbon
GAC-10 (this filter) GAC carbon Chlorine taste & odor (no iron/sulfur)
CAT-10 Catalytic carbon Chloramine, VOCs, mild H₂S, trace iron (~0.3 ppm)
CATKDF85-10 Catalytic + KDF-85 Iron & H₂S (light–moderate, ~1–3 ppm), broad chemical
Stage 3 — Carbon block / polishing
CTO-10 Standard CTO block Final polishing · chlorine, taste, odor
CBCO-10-5 Coconut carbon block Premium taste · higher adsorption, cleaner finish

Good to know before you buy

No iron or sulfur removal. GAC is a taste-and-odor carbon. If your water has iron, or a rotten-egg (H₂S) smell, use the catalytic CAT-10 or CATKDF85-10 as your carbon stage instead.

Put a sediment filter first. A SED5 pre-filter keeps grit out of the carbon bed and protects the whole system.

Tackling chloramine seriously? Standard GAC helps, but catalytic carbon (CAT-10) is more effective for chloramine-heavy municipal water.
