What it does

The 5-micron spun polypropylene sediment cartridge is the first stage in a filtration stack. It captures dirt, silt, sand, rust, and scale particles as water enters, so this grit never reaches the filters that follow.

Trapping particulate up front does two jobs: it keeps your water clear, and it protects everything downstream — carbon cartridges, RO membranes, plumbing fixtures, and appliances all last longer when they aren’t clogged by sediment. Replacing a $6 sediment filter on schedule is the cheapest way to extend the life of pricier stages.

Manufactured to standard 10″ × 2.5″ (9⅞″ × 2.5″) dimensions, it drops into most standard-size housings used in whole-house filtration and multi-stage systems.

Good to know before you buy

Always the first stage. Sediment goes before carbon and RO. Capturing grit up front is what protects those pricier stages — install this ahead of any carbon or membrane filter.

Well water or heavy sediment? Consider the pleated SED5-PLT — more surface area means higher dirt-holding capacity and longer intervals between changes.

When to change it. Replace every 3–12 months. Shorter if your water carries more sediment or your pressure drops noticeably — a clogged sediment filter chokes flow to the whole system.
