What it does

This is the upgraded second-stage carbon filter. Catalytic carbon goes beyond ordinary GAC: it reduces chlorine and, importantly, chloramine — plus VOCs, industrial solvents, and the taste and odor issues standard carbon struggles with. It also converts hydrogen sulfide (the “rotten-egg” smell) through oxidation, and helps with trace iron.

It’s made with Centaur® catalytic activated carbon from Calgon Carbon — a premium media known for high catalytic activity, better contaminant conversion, and long service life. That’s what separates this cartridge from a generic catalytic filter.

Use it as the Stage 2 upgrade in a whole-house or under-sink RO system where chloramine or mild sulfur odor is the concern. For heavier iron and sulfur (well water), step up to the KDF-85 version — see the comparison below. Standard 10″ × 2.5″ (9⅞″ × 2.5″) dimensions fit common housings.

Good to know before you buy

Iron — trace only. CAT-10 provides limited iron reduction, best for trace iron in municipal water (up to ~0.3 ppm). It is not a primary iron filter. For light-to-moderate iron (~1–3 ppm), use the CATKDF85-10 (KDF-85 redox), which also prevents iron fouling of downstream filters.

Hydrogen sulfide (rotten-egg smell). Catalytic carbon oxidizes H₂S; CAT-10 handles mild sulfur odor. For stronger, more stable odor reduction use CATKDF85-10. For high sulfur, a backwashing system or aeration is recommended.

Manganese. For low manganese (~0.1–1.0 ppm), use the CATKDF85-10 version.

Pharmaceuticals & pesticides. Catalytic carbon helps reduce pesticides, herbicides, PFAS, and pharmaceuticals better than standard GAC; the CATKDF85-10 adds redox media for broader coverage.

Quick selection guide

Choose CAT-10 (this filter) if…
You’re on city water with chloramine, mild sulfur odor, or trace iron (<0.3 ppm), and want the Centaur® upgrade over GAC.
Step up to CATKDF85-10 if…
You have iron above ~0.3 ppm, stronger sulfur odor, low manganese, or want broader chemical/PFAS coverage.
Premium 3-stage ◂ includes this filter
SED5 + CAT-10 + CBCO-10-5
Budget alternative
Standard GAC-10 if you only need chlorine taste & odor
