Description
High-capacity Big Blue sediment pre-filter that captures dirt, silt, sand, rust, and scale at whole-house flow rates — the essential first stage that protects every filter after it.
What it does
The 5-micron melt-blown polypropylene Big Blue sediment cartridge is the first stage of a whole-house filtration system. Installed on the main water line, it captures dirt, silt, sand, rust, and scale particles as water enters your home — before that grit can reach anything downstream.
The oversized 10″ × 4.5″ Big Blue format holds far more media than a slim 10″ × 2.5″ cartridge, which means higher flow with less pressure drop and much greater dirt-holding capacity — exactly what a whole-house line demands. Its graded melt-blown structure traps larger particles in the outer layers and finer ones toward the core, so the cartridge loads evenly instead of blinding off at the surface.
Trapping particulate up front does two jobs: it keeps your water clear, and it protects everything downstream — carbon cartridges, specialty media, plumbing fixtures, water heaters, and appliances all last longer when they aren’t clogged by sediment. Replacing an inexpensive sediment filter on schedule is the cheapest way to extend the life of pricier stages.

Good to know before you buy
Always the first stage. Sediment goes before carbon and specialty media. Capturing grit up front is what protects those pricier stages — install this ahead of any other Big Blue cartridge.
Big Blue vs. slim 10″×2.5″. Same job, much bigger body: more media surface means higher flow, less pressure drop, and longer intervals between changes. If your housing is a standard 10″ × 4.5″ Big Blue, this is your size — a slim cartridge will not seal in it.
When to change it. Replace every 3–6 months. Shorter if your water carries more sediment or you notice a pressure drop — a clogged sediment filter chokes flow to the whole house.
