Description
Our flagship Big Blue carbon stage: premium catalytic carbon plus KDF-85 media in one cartridge — advanced chloramine reduction, H₂S odor control, and help against heavy metals, with the longest service life in our carbon range.
What it does
This cartridge combines two premium media in one Big Blue shell. Catalytic carbon handles the chemistry standard carbon can’t: its enhanced surface actively breaks down chloramine — the stable chlorine-ammonia disinfectant many utilities now use — along with regular chlorine and the taste and odor compounds behind bad-tasting water.
KDF-85 is a copper-zinc redox media that works by electrochemical reaction rather than adsorption. It targets hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) — the “rotten egg” odor — and helps reduce heavy metals. It also earns its keep a second way: KDF inhibits microbial growth inside the media bed and takes load off the carbon, which is why this cartridge delivers a long service life in whole-house duty.
The result is our most capable single carbon cartridge: run it after a sediment stage in a standard 10″ × 4.5″ Big Blue housing and one cartridge covers chloramine, chlorine, H₂S odor, taste, and heavy-metal reduction at whole-house flow.

Good to know before you buy
CATKDF85 vs. CAT — do you need the KDF? Both handle chloramine and chlorine. Choose this cartridge when H₂S odor or heavy-metal concerns are also in play, or when you want maximum service life from one housing — the KDF-85 layer takes load off the carbon and inhibits microbial growth in the bed. If chloramine alone is the issue, CAT-10BB covers it for less.
Set expectations at whole-house flow. Chloramine and heavy-metal reduction depend on contact time, so results at full household flow are more modest than at a single faucet. For drinking-water-critical reduction, pair this whole-house stage with point-of-use filtration at the tap.
Strong H₂S needs dedicated treatment. This cartridge handles light-to-moderate rotten-egg odor. A heavily sulfurous well is a job for an oxidizing/backwashing system — test your water first if the odor is severe.
Sediment first, flush on install. Keep a sediment cartridge ahead of it, and run new media to drain a few minutes until the water clears.
